Mr. Spencer Hawkins

Dr. Hawkins began his career in education as a secondary school counselor in 1998.  As such, the forging of positive relationships with students, parents, and staff is a top priority for him. Dr. Hawkins worked as a counselor at Durham’s Jordan High School in the area of freshman transition. In 2010, he transitioned into school leadership because he wished to be an active agent of school reform and maximized potential for all students. Dr. Hawkins completed his Principal Internship at Smith Middle School in 2011-2012 before serving as Assistant Principal at Eastern Alamance High School and Carrboro High School for the following six years. He returned to Smith in 2018 as Assistant Principal where he worked until joining the Tiger admin team in 2025. He has worked as an educator at every level of K12 and in four NC school districts - and even as a private consultant specializing in the development of high school transition programs.

Dr. Hawkins has a B.A. in Political Science from UNC-Greensboro, a Masters of Counselor Education from NC State, and a Masters of School Administration and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership both from UNC Chapel Hill. He earned his doctorate in 2017 after successfully defending his dissertation, the focus of which was student equity as evidenced through high school scheduling and teacher assignment practices. He is also a certified scuba diver, avid Tar Heels basketball fan, and nerdy comic book collector who enjoys working out and traveling (especially to Walt Disney World with his family!).

Dr. Hawkins oversees the CTE, Cultural Arts, Healthful Living, ML, and Student Services departments.
